THE GIFT OF GYPSIES

By

Barbara Casey

The Nightjar’s Promise is the fourth and final book in The F.I.G. MYSTERIES. One of the themes I introduce in Book 1, The Cadence of Gypsies, is the Gypsy culture, including their beliefs and practices. This is something I researched extensively when writing about Carolina who is hired to mentor three young orphans who are females of intellectual genius—F.I.G.s. I continue this theme in Books 2, 3, and 4 of the series.

In The Cadence of Gypsies, Carolina learns that her parents are Gypsies, and that her mother, Lyuba, is a choovihni or wisewoman within the Kaulo Camio tribe. Not only does Lyuba possess the knowledge of all life, passed down to her through generations, she has the ability to communicate with Carolina, her daughter, telepathically. Carolina will learn that she also has this gift.

Because of her innate ability, Lyuba knows when Carolina is in danger. This knowledge extends to everyone Carolina loves, especially Dara, Mackenzie, and Jennifer, the three F.I.G.s.

As Jennifer struggles to come to terms with the fact that her parents were not killed in a car accident, her best friends Dara, Mackenzie, and Carolina try to help her uncover the truth as to why her parents would have deceived her. It is during this search that Carolina and the F.I.G.s meet a danger that is so dangerous and terrifying that it takes their combined special talents and the warnings of the Gypsy thousands of miles away to survive.

Things were going so well for all three of them, better than she could have imagined in fact. She had been afraid for them when they first left Wood Rose. Other than Jennifer who had traveled quite a bit with her parents before they were killed, they had practically no experience in a world that wasn’t enclosed by stone walls. And they were different. These differences presented challenges, and she wasn’t sure they could survive beyond Wood Rose in a society that could be less than kind. But each FIG had found her passion and they were surpassing all of her expectations—at least she thought they were.

Carolina fixed a cup of hot tea and carried it into her small living room where she sat and stared at her phone. Part of her was trying to say there was nothing wrong—that Jennifer just wanted to see her friends before Thanksgiving. But the other part told Carolina that there was a darkness surrounding Jennifer, and that darkness would destroy her if they couldn’t help her to reach some sort of resolution. Off in the distance she heard the faint call of a whip-poor-will. She also heard Lyuba—her mother—call the bird by its ancient name—nightjar. Watch for the nightjar.
