The Thoughts of a Naïve Child
By Rene Voland

“As human beings, you are my brothers
and sisters; there is no difference in substance.
I can talk with you as I would to old friends.”

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Handbook for the Spirit.

I was a naive little girl with a huge imagination. I ,too, believed we were all brothers and sisters, who lived in different houses and were different colors. Around age five, I was both color and difference blinded in my own little Garden of Eden. All people were all welcomed.

I had so much beautiful diversity in my little world. Then one day my world shattered. I learned that some of my brothers and sisters hated me and others because of our differences. And it was not because of anything that I had done to them. I didn’t understand then and I still don’t.

Why was there hatred throughout the earth among brothers and sisters? And about what? In Sunday school, I’d learned about God and how we’re all His children. So that’s how we were related. I knew it and no one had told me. I later learned that we were all of one blood.

So, there it was again. We were related. So then why didn’t all God’s children act like they are related to one another? Why was there no trust, patience, kindness, forgiveness, honor, or protection? Why jealousy, anger and judgment? “Sibling rivalry!” I told myself. That’s it!? It’s in our families because it’s in God’s big “happy” family!

Why is there so much sibling rivalry among God’s children? When will God frankly grow tired of his kid’s constant squabbles? These were the thoughts of a naïve child. I once was a child and now I am old. Sibling rivalry is a much bigger issue than I once thought.
